Warren Drane

"Hello, my name is Warren Drane. These are my brothers, Damon and Jess. We are the Brothers of Drane. You have joined us for any number of reasons, and we humbly thank you for taking this journey ahead with us, for seeking us out. We are an experimental and revolutionary community. We live as an extended family. We promise you will be safe with us. I started this group about four years ago as a place where people who felt cast off, unloved, and unwanted could have a place where they felt included, loved, and wanted. Growing up, I saw how mainstream society treated those that they perceived as different. They were ridiculed, mocked, hit, spat on, what have you. Trust me, I was one of them. No one did anything about it. They were afraid to stand up. Not me. I decided to do something about it. I saw just how careless and ignorant so many people were, how the world in general was. It made me sick. So, Damon and I came together and started this group. We picked up Jess here. He was starving and hungry - I mean can you believe that? We’ve also got Nev, Alex, Brandon, Case, and Allen. I call them my archbloods, because we are higher than everyone else, higher blooded. All of us came from nothing, and now we’re here, we're something, ready to take on the world one step at a time. Are you ready?"

Appearance[]

Warren Drane was in his mid 20s to his mid 30s throughout the group's existence. As with other members, his hair was long and occasionally tied back into a man-bun or ponytail. He was said to have taken immaculate care of his appearance, always carrying items such as brushes and chapstick with him at all times, even using some of the personal belongings of his victims to take care of himself. Like all members of the group, he always took to wearing a black shirt with a red scarf, the official uniform of the group.

As his mental state deteriorated, Drane became increasingly unkempt, wearing a shabby beard and his long hair out in unkempt curls. Jesse Hood even referred to him as a "homeless Jesus". His eyes became sunken, and he sometimes wore a blank, distant expression that went nowhere. He also became thinner, a "skeleton covered in thin skin".

Personality[]

Warren Drane was a complex individual. He was a firm believer in his isolationist and misanthropic beliefs, viewing the outside world as evil and hostile, that ordinary humans were a sub-rate species that needed to be avoided at all costs in order for him and his followers to achieve their fullest potentials. He demanded total obedience and loyalty to the group, so much so that he required each member to sever any ties with family members, friends, and coworkers, and even leave their jobs.

In the group's early years, Drane often displayed a kind, charismatic, and gentle demeanor that helped gain the trust of his followers and make them more susceptible to his teachings. He would often joke around with his fellow members and see to it that they were treated well and fairly. Drane made it clear he would prefer for his followers to be genuinely happy and enjoying their life in the group instead of just using it as an escape. He also believed in working as a collective and equal society, meaning everyone had a share in the work and whatever profit merited from it. In turn, Drane was well-liked by his followers, who had known nothing but hardship in their lives.

In the group's later years, Drane suffered from increasing paranoia and a belief that not only was the outside world evil and was to be avoided at all times, but now the people inside it were corrupted and wishing to do the group harm. This obsession with proving himself right ultimately led to not only his downfall, but also the downfall of the Brothers of Drane entirely.

Trivia[]

  • Drane was 36 years old at the date of his death.
  • His alias "Coda" is of unknown origin. Some have theorized that it was an acronym, a mantra or motto of the group's ideologies, with the most popular being "Condition, Organization, Detachment, and Apartness". However, this has yet to be confirmed.
  • Drane was an admirer of religion and mythology and would often incorporate these into his teachings. He often spoke of different Satanic and Luciferian beliefs, admiring the rebellious nature of the Devil and later adding to it with his rigid philosophies of world conquest and the annihilation of inferior creatures.
  • Five letters addressed to Drane were discovered in the northern New Hampshire compound following his death. However, the contents of these letters were ambiguous, as they were filled with nothing but crude scribbles and silhouettes. Police were never able to determine and track down whoever sent these letters. Some, including lead detective Daniel Morse, believed that they were written in a discreet way only Drane and his followers understood, while others believed that Drane had written them himself as a result of his failing mental health.
  • It should be noted that Drane only ever allowed men to join the group. not women. In his personal journals, he displayed a violent hatred for women, describing them as "mere sexual objects" and "distractions and pastimes for the advancement of man". Female friends, girlfriends, wives, and daughters were strictly prohibited from being part of the group, and anyone who held love affairs or maintained their relationships away from the group were immediately expelled. 13 women would later die at the hands of the Brothers of Drane.
