The Nameless Mist, or Magnum Innominandum (which translates to "the great Not-To-Be-Named"), is a massive nebulous being found in the deep reaches of outer space. Part of a pantheon of netherbeings called the Outer Gods, The Mist is supposedly one of the oldest beings in existence. Legends say that it is the progenitor of several other anomalous beings of similar or even greater power.
Description[]
Appearance[]
The Mist resembles an enormous cloud of white vapors, though is said to move much differently than mist or smoke normally seen on Earth. While it is not stated just how large it is, The Mist is said to be several times bigger than our Solar System. Localized manifestations of The Mist have shown that the vapors are much thicker than normal fog, able to interact with its environment like solid matter, This thickness makes it very difficult (if not impossible) to see through it with even light having trouble penetrating it. Countless tendril-like protrusions can be seen flaring from the main body, their purpose remains unknown. Witnesses and accounts from the Necronomicon have stated that horrible, unfathomable beings dwell within The Mist. It is said that beholding The Mist triggers an instinctual fear in humans.
Abilities[]
- Omnipresence: It is highly speculated that The Mist is able to transcend both time and space, not only being able to view past, present and future events but also be in these places simultaneously.
- Immortality: Considering the possibility of The Mist's omnipresence, it is safe to assume that it also may be immortal (or at least has an immeasurable lifespan).
- Omniscience: Considering the possibility of The Mist's omnipresence, it is safe to assume this ability affords The Mist extensive knowledge over most if not all of the universe and beyond. It should be noted that other creatures (including its offspring Yog-Sothoth) have been claimed to be more reliable to seek out for knowledge. Whether this is because of lesser capabilities or its aversion to humanity is unknown.
- Reality Warping: In Journey Through The Mist, the titular being was shown to be able to alter and manipulate matter on various degrees.
- Space-Time Manipulation: In Journey Through The Mist, The Nameless Mist was able to traverse lightyears in a matter of minutes. It was also shown to be able to manifest in multiple places at once as well as influence the technology and equipment used in C.A.P.S. headquarters.
- Telepathy: It is speculated that, like many other beings in the pantheon, The Mist is capable of telepathic communication as well as its associated abilities.
- Possession: In Journey Through The Mist, after being contacted by Agent Garcia in a Rocket Man unit, The Mist is shown to be able to possess and control the lifeless body of the agent.
- Assimilation: The Mist has the ability to assimilate any and all matter into itself. It is speculated that sapient beings assimilated into The Mist can influence its personality and reason.
History[]
Origin[]
Very little is known about the origin of The Nameless Mist. It is speculated that The Mist, along with two other powerful beings, were begot by the primordial demiurge, Azathoth sometime before and somewhere outside the universe we know. It would then go on to both begat and assimilate countless creatures throughout the universe. It is unknown if it was partially or solely responsible for the creation of the Court of Azathoth.
Contact With Humanity[]
Some time in 2006, a group of unwitting scientists accidentally discovered The Mist in deep space. After monitoring it for several months, the scientists sent a probe to investigate the anomaly. This angered the creature, causing it to brutally injure one and scaring the others into never looking for it again. One of the scientists reported the incident, which alerted the Capture and Protect Service. After screening those who discovered The Mist, C.A.P.S. operatives selected a few to find it in order to form an alliance. This only angered The Mist more, prompting it to attempt to destroy humanity all together. In the ensuing conflict, The Mist entered our Solar System, assimilating Pluto, the agents stationed on the planet as well as Special Agent Garcia whom it uses as a proxy. However, The Mist reconsidered its plans after a plea of mercy from one of the scientists on the caveat that it never be sought after by another human. As of Journey Through The Mist, the titular creature was supposedly discovered by a rich eccentric, with the author assuming that it was on its way to make good on its warning.
Notes[]
