The Ayuwoki - also referred to as "El Hee Hee" - is a horror-based parody to the singer Michael Jackson inspired by a user's tribute to the icon dating back to July 2009. Since then, it spread across the internet as a meme, growing popular in Spanish-speaking countries by late February and early March of 2019.
History[]
The YouTuber thomasrengstorff had originally posted the a series of videos under the title of "My Ghoul Jackson", dedicated to showcasing an animatronic inspired by the iconic pop singer Michael Jackson on the 27th of July 2009. The creation was made as a way to honor Michael during his Thriller era and gained attention across the web not only due to Michael's passing on the 25th of June 2009 but the animatronic's unnerving appearance. The creator himself likely gave the creation the name "Ayuwoki", inspired by Michael Jackson's lyrics in the song "Smooth Criminal".
As the creation grew in popularity, the creator continued to post several videos about it (the playlist itself) as well as other content creators inspired by its appearance. Most of the videos themselves are randomly edited versions of the zoom-ins of the animatronic's face with distorted Michael Jackson songs playing in the background (that alongside other random sound effects in general). Other content creators went for the "Calling the Ayuwoki at 3AM Challenge" approach or continued to create memes about the creation instead.
By the 26th of November 2019, a gaming studio known as "DeadlyCrow Games" picked up on the trend and released a game titled "Escape the Ayuwoki" which continued to bring more attention to the creation as a whole.
